होटल और रेस्टोरेंट के बिल में लगने वाले सर्विस चार्ज किसी और नाम से दिखाई दे सकता है. दरअसल, दिल्ली हाई कोर्ट ने नेशनल रेस्टोरेंट एसोसिएशन ऑफ इंडिया ((NRAI)) और फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडियन होटल्स एंड रेस्टोरेंट ((FIHR)) से कहा है कि खाने के बिल में सर्विस चार्ज के बजाय और किसी और शब्द का इस्तेमाल किया जाए. कोर्ट ने सुझाव देते हुए कहा कि सर्विस चार्ज की जगह स्टाफ वेलफेयर चार्ज जैसे टर्म का इस्तेमाल हो सकता है ताकि ग्राहकों को ये न लगे कि ये कोई सरकारी टैक्स या चार्ज है. कोर्ट ने होटल और रेस्टोरेंट को ये भी निर्देश दिया कि वे अपने मेनू पर ये न दिखाएं कि हाई कोर्ट ने सर्विस चार्ज को मंजूरी दे दी है. कोर्ट ने ऐसा इसलिए कहा क्योंकि होटल और रेस्टोरेंट के मेनू पर लिखे सर्विस चार्ज से ये लगता है कि सरकार ग्राहकों से कोई सर्विस टैक्स वसूल रही है, जबकि ये चार्ज होटल और रेस्टोरेंट की जेब में जाता है. कोर्ट ने सेंट्रल कंज्यूमर प्रोटेक्शन अथॉरिटी ((CCPA)) की तरफ से आपत्ति जताए जाने पर होटल और रेस्टोरेंट एसोसिएशन को ये निर्देश जारी किया.
The service charge levied in hotel and restaurant bills may appear under a different name. In fact, the Delhi High Court has asked the National Restaurant Association of India ((NRAI)) and the Federation of Indian Hotels and Restaurants ((FIHR)) to use some other word instead of service charge in the food bill. The court suggested that instead of service charge, a term like staff welfare charge can be used so that the customers do not feel that it is a government tax or charge. The court also directed the hotels and restaurants not to display on their menus that the High Court has approved the service charge. The court said this because the service charge written on the menu of hotels and restaurants gives an impression that the government is collecting some service tax from the customers, whereas this charge goes into the pocket of hotels and restaurants. The court issued these directions to the Hotel and Restaurant Association on objection raised by the Central Consumer Protection Authority ((CCPA)).
