साल 2003 के पहले तक राजकुमार हिरानी गुमनामी के अंधेरे में कहीं खोए थे. तब वो फिल्मों की एडिटिंग का काम करते थे. छोटे-मोटे टीजर और प्रोमो बनाते थे. तब बॉलीवुड की रंगीन गैलेक्सी में इनके लिए कोई जगह नहीं थी. लेकिन मुन्ना भाई एमबीबीएस रिलीज होने के बाद हिन्दी सिनेमा के आलोचक समीक्षक हैरान परेशान हो गए कि ये कौन सा डायरेक्टर है जिसने अपनी पहली ही फिल्म में इतनी बारीकी दिखा दी. लगे रहो मुन्ना भाई के बाद तो राजू हिरानी इंडस्ट्री में ना सिर्फ कायदे से स्थापित हो गए बल्कि नामचीन भी हो गए. हिरानी की खासियत ये है कि वे क्वांटिटी नहीं क्वालिटी के तलबगार रहते हैं. 3-4 साल में एक फिल्म बनाते हैं लेकिन क्या बनाते हैं.
