कोलकाता में 500 साल पहले कम्युनिटी पूजा की शुरुआत हुई थी. 20वीं सदी की शुरुआत तक ये संस्कृति बन गई. 21वीं शताब्दी में यहां थीम बेस्ड पंडाल बनाने का दौर शुरू हुआ. ये काम इतना मौलिक है कि किसी की भी डिजाइन दूसरे पंडाल से मेल नहीं खाती. इस बार कोलकाता में 2000 से ज्यादा पंडाल बने हैं.
