सूर्य और चन्द्रमा के एक साथ होने से अमावस्या की तिथि होती है. इसमें सूर्य और चन्द्रमा के बीच का अंतर शून्य हो जाता है. यह तिथि पितरों की तिथि मानी जाती है. इसमें चन्द्रमा की शक्ति जल में प्रविष्ट हो जाती है.
